Hi Rich, thanks for the kind words. A lot has gone on since I wrote that post. If you have time (and I know it’s a couple years worth of posts but you can probably skip a few posts) you should read some of the more recent posts. The short recap is – I got up to about 13 miles and got a serious case of runners knee – I used to play soccer & tennis when I was younger and all the damage that was done then, came back to haunt me. So I couldn’t run for a bit. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in Sept 0f 2008 (clean bill of health ever since!), my grandmother passed away in Oct of the same year, I took some time off from training, got back into training, started swimming again, started running again, had knee injury, stopped training, started a business and got back into swimming again. That should bring you right up to the present day. I’m now doing all my posting at http://www.sundaydrivedesigns.com
My knees are still in rough shape but the swimming definitely helps. The ultimate goal is to do a half ironman at some point in the near (5-8 years from now) future. I was really starting to love running. And I want to get back into it, but I need to work on my knees first. I find the book Born to Run by Chris MacDougal is a huge inspriation, so I would check it out if I were you. I’m actually running in the minimalist sneakers, when I do run and I notice no knee pain. I also do things like walk 1 minute, run 1 minute, walk 1, run 2, walk 1, run 3 and progress it up and then slowly work my way back down to the walk 1, run 1. Hope that helps!

I love running as well, in particular stairs. I only can recommend any one to add some type of running to his or her routine. It helps with stress, prevents becoming sick and boost your mood.

Newer runner here. I am learning someting everyday. I ran all of last year and took the first quarter of this year off. I am back to where I left off finally in regards to distance, but speed not so much. This super hot summer is holding me back. I would love an update and your relationship with running.

Oh do I know how you feel! I have just started training for 10k and even though I am generally quite fit running just takes the life out of me. I am using couch potato to 5k training app on my i-pod with my own variations which seems to work a treat. If you are competitive as me - get yourself a running buddy (it always shames me to stop if I am running with somebody else, but be aware of your knees as I managed to ruin mine pushing through pain) Also try to run mornings, or middays, or evenings - you may feel that there is time in a day when it feels much easier. Good luck!
